Nations League: England and Germany share six-goal thriller, Italy thump Hungary

Points were shared after England and Germany locked in a thrilling encounter that finished 3-3 at the Wembley Stadium on Monday night. Despite the draw, England have already been relegated from their UEFA Nations League Group A.

Gareth Southgate’s men definitely roared and screamed in their final warm-up match before the FIFA World Cup as they crawled their way back from two goals down to take the lead momentarily before settling for a 3-3 draw with Germany.

England had been in woeful form and had failed to score in an international match since June. The Three Lions had also not won a fixture since March of this year and with pressure continuing to mount on Southgate, the 52-year-old found himself staring at the end of the barrel when Ilkay Gundogan and Kai Havertz scored to make it look like Die Manschafft were well on their way to victory.

However, fate had other ideas as Luke Shaw and Mason Mount scored twice in the span of four minutes to level the score before VAR awarded a penalty to England.

Captain Harry Kane stepped up and converted to give the home side a brief lead. The hosts were robbed off a fairy-tale ending however, as Havertz grabbed his second goal of the night to settle the score at 3-3 and providing plenty of excitement for the neutral supporters.

Meanwhile, tonight's draw was their highest scoring game that was goalless at half-time since October 2008 (5-1 vs Kazakhstan). Leaky. pic.twitter.com/NMRQBkNndp

Nations League finals spots were off the table for both sides, with England already relegated to the competition’s second tier and Germany coming into their last matchday sitting third. With that being said, the game held importance in England as it was their final test ahead of the World Cup, which begins on November 20.

With this result, Southgate’s side ended up at the bottom of their group with just three points and behind Germany, who collected seven. Italy topped the group with 11 points after beating second-placed Hungary 2-0 in Budapest.

Giacomo Raspadori and Federico Dimarco scored on either side of the half-time break for the reigning European champions to seal the top spot in their group.
