Los Rojiblancos’ custodian Jan Oblak could be on the move in January as Atletico Madrid consider Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as a replacement, claims The Mirror.
The shot-stopper for the LaLiga club will be out of contract at the end of the season, and the Slovenian international has yet to reach an agreement with the club on a new contract.
As a result, the Spanish club is keeping an eye on Martinez. However, the chance to play Champions League football would make a move to Madrid appealing for the Argentine, putting the Villans in a difficult position.
He earned his reputation as one of the Premier League’s top shot-stoppers since joining Villa from Arsenal in a 20 million pounds deal in September 2020, and he is also Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Oblak may be able to leave for free next year. If Atletico cannot agree on a new contract with the Slovenian, they will consider selling him in January. The 29-year-old has established himself as one of the world’s best goalkeepers over the years after moving to Madrid from SL Benfica in July 2014.
Meanwhile, Manchester United appears to be having problems in goal. David de Gea’s contract expires next summer, and the Telegraph claims that the Red Devils are considering not renewing his contract. Since joining the club in 2011, the 31-year-old goalkeeper has been a devoted member of the squad.
However, the Spaniard has been inconsistent in recent seasons. While he appears to be back to his best, there are some flaws in his game. United fans have reservations about the 31-year-old playing from the back. It is clearly not De Gea’s strongest suit, as evidenced by his performances in the first two games of the 2022/23 season.
