Jurgen Klopp’s men put a 4-1 thumping by Napoli aside and returned to winning ways by beating Ajax 2-1 in their second group game of the ongoing Champions League season.
The Reds took the lead in the 17th minute with a goal created by a combination of all three of the frontmen. Luis Diaz flicked the ball on for Diogo Jota, who, in turn, slid it through for Mohamed Salah and the Egyptian made no mistake from close range.
However, Liverpool’s lead lasted ten minutes. Steven Berghuis ran into space out wide at the other end before pulling the ball across the penalty box. It was collected by Mohammed Kudus, who fired a powerful shot in off the crossbar.
The two teams went close again on either side of the break, with compatriots Virgil van Dijk and Daley Blind missing a header each. But, Liverpool sealed all three points a minute before the ninety, when Joel Matip headed in a Kostas Tsimikas corner.
In Germany, Atletico Madrid were on the end of a shock 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. The Rojiblancos probed for an opening, but the Leverkusen defence stood firm before the attack sealed the points with two late goals.
Robert Andrich scored first, firing a powerful, low shot past Ivo Grbic in the Atletico goal off a Jeremie Frimpong cross. Andrich scored in the 84th minute; three minutes later, Moussa Diaby turned Frimpong’s cross past Grbic at the back post to double Leverkusen’s lead and hand them the three points.
FC Porto, meanwhile, were beaten 4-0 by Club Brugge, with Ferran Jutgla, Kamal Sowah, Andreas Skov Olsen, and Antonio Nusa on the scoresheet. The win propelled the Belgian champions to the top of Group B, ahead of Porto, Bayer, and Atletico.
