Harry Kane scored twice – and missed a spot-kick – to help Tottenham Hotspur beat Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Spurs continued their fine form at the start of the season by defeating the newly-promoted Nottingham Forest 2-0. The win helped Spurs climb up to third in the table with ten points, one of five sides yet to be beaten this season, level with Manchester City in second and Brighton and Hove Albion in fourth.

Spurs took the lead five minutes after kick-off. Dejan Kulusevski created space for Kane to run into with his stride through to the middle. The Swede then threaded the ball through to Kane, who picked his spot in the corner with expert precision, and goalkeeper Dean Henderson was left rooted to the ground.

Tottenham were awarded a spot-kick in the 58th minute when Steve Cook, under pressure from Kane, handled the ball on the goal-line. Cook survived a red card, and Forest survived the scare as Henderson stopped the Englishman from doubling the visitors’ lead with a superb save – his second penalty stop in two home games.

Nonetheless, Kane made amends for his earlier miss by heading in a Richarlison cross in the 81st minute, ensuring maximum points for Antonio Conte and Co.

At Villa Park, Steven Gerrard’s hapless Aston Villa suffered their second loss in succession and third in four games at the hands of the previously winless West Ham.

The Hammers moved out of the relegation zone courtesy of Pablo Fornals’ 74th-minute strike, which took a deflection off Ezri Konsa and looped over Emiliano Martinez guarding the Villa goal. Villa play Arsenal and Man City next in the league.

Meanwhile, Bruno Lage’s Wolves remained winless, surrendering their lead in the 90th minute to Newcastle – the Magpies yet to be beaten this season.

Ruben Neves gave Wolves the lead with a piledriver from outside the box in the 38th minute, but Allan Saint-Maximin came up with a stunning leveller in the 90th minute – a volley from outside the box – to ensure the points were split between the two teams.
