The Magpies have completed a club-record deal for attacker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad, the club confirmed on Friday. The Sweden international becomes the club’s fourth signing of the summer after Matt Targett, Nick Pope, and Sven Botman.

Newcastle have paid 65 million euros plus add-ons to secure the deal, tying the youngster down to a six-year contract that will run until the end of the 2027/28 season. Isak has chosen the number 14 for his stay in Tyneside.

Speaking in his first interview, the 22-year-old complimented the club on its rich history, claiming that he cannot wait to play in front of “amazing” fans.

“It is a great, historical club that I think anyone would like to play for, with amazing fans. They were a big part of why I came here – and also the club’s project, which is one that I really believe in.

“You always want to go into a team and know how they play. I think Newcastle play very attractive football and I want to be a part of that.”

Isak first broke onto the scene for local Swedish giants AIK before he was snapped up by Borussia Dortmund. The forward struggled for playing time in Germany – making just 13 appearances in two years – and was eventually sold to Real Sociedad in 2019, where he would last three years, during which time he made 132 appearances and scored 44 goals.

Newcastle will hope that Isak fits seamlessly into the first team following the injury to Callum Wilson.

With the Englishman among the goalscorers in two of the Magpies’ three matches so far, they have remained unbeaten – beating Nottingham Forest before drawing with Brighton and Manchester City.
