Georginio Wijnaldum will be out for a while after breaking his leg in training, according to AS Roma’s official website. The club has not yet stated how long the former Liverpool star will be out.

The midfielder only joined the Giallorossi this summer, completing a loan move from Paris Saint-Germain after going to great lengths to secure the deal. The 31-year-old made his debut from the bench in a win over Salernitana last weekend but now must wait to find out how long he will be out.

He is now set to miss to play for Jose Mourinho’s side against newly promoted Cremonese on Monday. And Roma have provided an update on the player who was hoping to represent the Netherlands in the upcoming World Cup.

“Following an injury sustained during training this afternoon, Georginio Wijnaldum subsequently underwent medical tests that confirmed the presence of a fracture to the tibia in his right leg. The player will undergo further assessments in the coming days!”

    a Roma statement read.

The Italian club will learn the extent of the problem in the coming days when the results of additional tests are received. Wijnaldum earlier struggled for minutes at PSG after joining from Liverpool last season, starting only 18 games in Ligue 1.

His participation in the upcoming World Cup may also be jeopardised due to the injury. The midfielder represented the Netherlands in the 2014 edition of the tournament, and he also captained the country at Euro 2020 after the Oranje failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Wijnaldum came on as a late substitute against Salernitana last week, playing as an attacking midfielder, but he is expected to play deeper for Roma. Mourinho still has Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini available for central midfield positions.

He has played over 80 times for the Netherlands. The FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar begins on November 20 and concludes on December 18. The Netherlands are in Group A with African champions Senegal, South American country Ecuador, and hosts Qatar.
