”I don’t play to lose” – South Africa captain Elgar confident ahead of England series

With his team currently topping the ICC World Test Championship standings, South Africa Test skipper Dean Elgar aims to continue their brilliance in the upcoming three-match series in England.

The Proteas have had an excellent run in the ongoing World Test Championship thus far. The side defeated India, the top-ranked side currently 2-1 at home after having lost the first Test and drew 1-1 in New Zealand. A 2-0 clean sweep of Bangladesh at home has helped them to the top of the WTC 2021-23 standings with a solid points percentage of 71.43.

Elgar has won eight of his 11 Tests as captain and has been a strong force as an opener. Ahead of the three-match series against England, beginning August 17 at Lord’s, Elgar said he wants his side to put the best foot forward to maintain their consistent run.

“I don’t play to lose. I absolutely despise losing. And if we play an average brand [of cricket], or we’re not putting our best foot forward, and we don’t have results going our way, then that affects me quite a bit,”

the 35-year-old was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

South Africa have been one of the better touring sides in England this century, having drawn one, won two Test series, before going down 3-1 on their last trip in 2017. The hosts have won four games on the bounce this season, having played a fearless brand of cricket under a new captain and coach, but all of that has Elgar unfussed.

“It’s gonna be a tough series, no doubt. They are a proud cricketing nation and I respect that. But I know they are definitely beatable. I didn’t come here to play second fiddle. I came here to win a series,”

    Elgar added.
