Former Chelsea striker Timo Werner scored on his emotional return to Leipzig, but it was not enough to secure their first win of the season, as Koln drew 2-2 on Saturday.

Leipzig played the majority of the game with 10 men after Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was shown a straight red card just before halftime for an elbow to the throat of Cologne’s Florian Kainz.

Werner’s long-range strike dipped under goalkeeper Marvin Schwaebe’s body and trickled across the line in the 36th minute, giving Leipzig the lead. However, Koln equalised just four minutes later when Florian Dietz dinked in from close range for his first Bundesliga goal.

Christopher Nkunku gave the hosts the lead in the 56th minute, but Koln equalised with 20 minutes remaining thanks to a clumsy own goal by Josko Gvardiol.

Meanwhile, Augsburg defeated Bayern Leverkusen 2-1 thanks to an 82nd-minute goal from Andre Hahn. Leverkusen, looking to bounce back from a first-round defeat to Borussia Dortmund, fell behind early when Augsburg midfielder Fredrik Jensen scored his team’s first Bundesliga goal of the season. Chilean midfielder Charles Aranguiz equalised just before halftime, but Hahn’s 82nd-minute goal gave Augsburg the lead and their first win of the season.

Elsewhere, Werder Bremen earned a late point at home against Stuttgart thanks to a goal in the 95th minute from Scottish winger Oliver Burke.  Bremen’s two-pronged attack of Niclas Fuellkrug and Marvin Ducksch combined once more to put the home side ahead early, with Fuellkrug scoring in the fourth minute thanks to Ducksch’s lead-up work.

Stuttgart equalised in the 38th minute through Wataru Endo, before Sasa Kalajdzic slid a perfect pass into the path of Silas Katompa Mvumpa in the 77th minute to put his side ahead 2-1, before Burke earned Bremen a late point.

Under pressure, Hertha Berlin roared out of the blocks at home against Eintracht Frankfurt, with Suat Serdar heading in a Dodi Lukebakio cross. Frankfurt, who started the season with heavy losses to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the midweek Super Cup, hit back just after halftime when Daichi Kamada capitalised on a Hertha defensive blunder to tie the game at 1-1. Frankfurt’s late penalty was overturned by VAR, and Hertha held on for their first point of the season.

In Sinsheim, Hoffenheim rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Bochum 3-2. The game began quickly, with Bochum’s Simon Zoller scoring in the 10th and 13th minutes, before Hoffenheim’s Christoph Baumgartnergot one back in the 14th. Ozan Kabak equalised in the 23rd minute, looping a header into the top left corner of the net for his first goal for Hoffenheim.

In the 58th minute, Hoffenheim were awarded the first penalty of the Bundesliga season, but Bochum keeper Manuel Riemann saved well from Andrej Kramaric to keep the score 2-2. The hosts took the lead in the 88th minute on a header from Munas Dabbur and held on for their first victory of the season.

In Saturday’s late game, Marius Bülter scored an injury-time penalty to salvage a 2-2 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach for newly promoted Schalke. On the other hand, Dortmund won 3-1 at Freiburg on Friday after scoring three goals in the final 15 minutes.
