“I have to let go of one format to prolong the career” feels Tamim Iqbal

Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal has hinted that he may have to retire from one format if he wants to play for 4-5 years.

There were some speculations over Tamim Iqbal’s future after he opted out of the T20I series against New Zealand. Iqbal has now opened up about his way forward and that he may have to quit one format to prolong his international career.

Speaking to the YouTube channel Allrounder, Tamim Iqbal said,

If I want to play for another four or five years, I don’t think I can play all three formats. It won’t be possible. I have to pick two formats that are important to me, in which I can have an impact for the team. It might be now or even after six months. I might not even play two formats. I may play just one format.

Speaking about his T20 World Cup aspirations, the 32-year old said that he’s very much looking forward to it.

Of course the T20 World Cup is very much on my mind and this is just six months away and I am not 36 or 37, so why not? T20 is not out of mind,

    he added.

Tamim Iqbal is the highest run-scorer in both the limited-overs formats for Bangladesh. He’s also the second highest run-scorer behind Mushfiqur Rahim in Tests for the country. Iqbal has 23 centuries and 85 half-centuries to his name in international cricket, which are most by any player for Bangladesh.

Tamim Iqbal made his debut in 2007 and has been one of the pillars of Bangladesh Cricket for over a decade. He’s been an important member of Bangladesh’s golden generation comprising Shakib Al Hassan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mashrafe Mortaza.

Bangladesh are next playing a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka starting April 21 at Pallekele. They will fly out to Colombo on April 12.
