According to The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur are about to add Djed Spence to their growing list of 2022 summer signings. The right-wingback will join the club from Middlesbrough after the two clubs agreed on a transfer fee.

Nottingham Forest, too, were interested in the England youth international earlier in the summer – Spence spent the 2021/22 season on loan at City Ground, helping the Tricky Trees achieve promotion via the playoffs – but withdrew when Spurs came into the picture and signed Neco Williams from Liverpool instead.

Spurs manager Antonio Conte hinted at Spence’s arrival during a press conference in South Korea. While he refused to confirm whether the Englishman would become a Tottenham player in the near future, he claimed that the club will always be looking to improve its roster whenever given the opportunity.

“Yeah, about Spence we don’t want to comment about speculation because it is disrespectful for all the other players, for the club and the other team.”

“Sure, we are always looking to improve the squad if there is the possibility,”

    said the Italian.

Spurs will, as per Fabrizio Romano, pay Middlesbrough a 12.5 million pound fee up-front to sign Spence. Furthermore, add-ons will take the total package close to the 20 million mark, should they be achieved.

The 21-year-old will sign a five-year deal with the club and become the third right-sided defender on their books after Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal, whom the club signed in the previous successive summers.

Spence broke into the Boro first-team in the 2019/20 season and made 64 appearances for the North Yorkshire club over the next two years. Finding himself on the peripheries of the first team under manager Neil Warnock, the youngster joined fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest on loan for the 2021/22 season and played a crucial role in their return to the Premier League after almost two decades. He made 46 appearances for Forest across all competitions last year and scored three goals.
