Midfielder Rodrigo “Rodri” Hernandez has committed his future to Manchester City by signing a new three-year extension to his current contract. Rodri, whose existing deal was supposed to run out in 2024, will stay at the Etihad until the end of the 2026/27 season.

His stock has risen in recent years despite a shaky start to life in Manchester, and he is now among the first names on Pep Guardiola’s team sheets at the base of his midfield. The Spaniard has won the Premier League title twice during his brief time in England.

Speaking to the club website, Rodri claimed his move to City in 2019 from Atletico Madrid to be the best decision of his career.

“Joining City in 2019 is the best decision I have made in my career.

“I have loved every second. The fans have been amazing with me, I feel totally supported by the Club and the manager pushes me every single day.

“I have improved so much as a player, and I want to thank Pep and all the backroom staff for their help. They are completely committed to helping me become the best player I can be, and I appreciate their hard work.

“We have been very successful since I came here, which is something that makes me very proud,”

     Rodri said.

Manchester City paid Los Rojiblancos 62.6 million euros to sign the then 23-year-old Rodri in 2019. Atletico, who themselves had signed the midfielder a season earlier from Villarreal, made a hefty profit of 40 million from the sale.

1 – During the 2021-22 Premier League campaign, Rodri ranked first among all midfielders for successful passes (2629), recoveries (292) and aerial win rate (72%), as well as scoring four goals across the final six games of the season. Extension. pic.twitter.com/Y3xo3kwARG

In his three seasons in Manchester, to date, the Spaniard has made 151 appearances and scored seven goals – and has developed into an important player for both his club and country.

With Rodri’s extension out of the way, City will turn their focus on tying down midfielder Phil Foden and winger Riyad Mahrez – as per Fabrizio Romano. Foden’s present deal runs out in 2024, while Mahrez’s a year earlier in 2023.
