Gomez pens five-year contract extension at Liverpool

The Reds defender Joe Gomez has signed a long-term extension with the club, keeping him at Anfield for another five seasons. Despite being a regular starter in the club’s Premier League-winning campaign, the Englishman has lost his place in the squad.

The 25-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Charlton in 2015, will take his stay beyond a decade, should he complete the duration of his new contract. He has penned a five-year deal with the club – his previous one was due to expire in the summer of 2024 – which will run until the end of the 2026/27 season.

Gomez is a versatile defender, one who is able to provide cover both at centre-back and right-back. He was a key part of the Liverpool backline that ended the club’s title drought in 2019/20, but injury troubles in the subsequent years, combined with Joel Matip’s form and Ibrahima Konate’s arrival, have kept him out of the starting line-up for much of the following campaigns.

Nevertheless, extending his stay until 2027, Gomez hoped his best years were ahead of him. He called Liverpool a special place in a sit-down with the club website and claimed that he feels he still has a lot to offer.

“It is an unbelievable place to be; in my eyes, probably one of the best – if not the best – clubs in the world at the minute. The opportunity to extend my stay here was an easy decision to make, really,”

he told the club’s official website.

“Obviously, I have been here quite a while now, but in the grand scheme of things I still feel young and, like you say, the best years are ahead of me. I have got more to learn and the time to do that.

“I think I have the platform here to do it with the manager and the coaching staff around me and my teammates, to make sure the best years are ahead.”

In his seven years at the club, Gomez has racked up 142 appearances but is yet to score a goal.
