Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen, who made a remarkable comeback to top-level football after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, is set to move to Manchester United following the expiry of his contract with Brentford.

David Ornstein of The Athletic has revealed that the 30-year-old has a verbal agreement to join Manchester United this summer. The news has appeared out of the blue as the Red Devils were previously heavily linked with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in recent weeks.

Eriksen is said to have communicated his desire to play at the Old Trafford and help United in a new challenge. They failed to finish among the top four teams in the Premier League last season and will have to contend with Europa League football in the upcoming season. The player is prepared to accept a three-year contract from Manchester United.

The Danish midfield maestro was extremely impressive for Brentford on a short six-month contract and played a massive role behind them escaping the relegation battle comfortably. He scored a goal and registered four assists in 11 Premier League appearances with the club as they finished 13th with 56 points.

Only two players have provided 10+ assists in four consecutive Premier League seasons:

United have now begun the process of drafting contracts for Eriksen and once they are finalised, the 30-year-old will have to appear for medical tests. While medical tests are standard routine checks that are performed on every player before the start of a season and during a signing, it could prove to be a hurdle that needs to be overcome given Eriksen’s troubled medical history.

The midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opening encounter and received life-saving CPR on the pitch. He was taken to the hospital, where his condition stabilised, but it was soon discovered that Eriksen had a weak heart, and he was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.

Because of this, he was unable to resume his top-level football career with his then-club Inter Milan, as Serie A rules dictate that players with artificial implants cannot play in the league.

The Italian club had then decided to terminate his contract, which led to Eriksen training with his boyhood club Ajax’s junior team for several months before making his comeback in the Premier League with Brentford. Impressive performances also saw him returning to the Danish national side, and he maintains his firm desire to play in the upcoming World Cup.

Eriksen had previously played for Tottenham between 2013 and 2020. He appeared 226 times in the Premier League and scored 51 goals for the North London side.
