Flamboyant batsman and Indian white-ball squad vice-captain KL Rahul has begun his journey of recovery after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia. The Karnataka man went under the knife in Germany, and it is being reported that the procedure was successfully completed.

However, the injury is a rather tricky one, and the rehabilitation process is expected to be slow. Typically, recovery from hernia surgery takes between six and 12 weeks, and as a result, Rahul will miss a major chunk of action over the next two or three months. The Indian side will hope that Rahul will be able to recover in time to get enough preparation for the all-important T20 World Cup in Australia, which is set to begin in October.

Rahul captained the Lucknow Super Giants in the side’s Indian Premier League season, as they finished fourth in the league after losing in the eliminator to the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Rahul led from the front, scoring 615 runs at an average of 51.33 while striking at 135.38 as he emerged as the second-highest run-scorer in the competition, only behind Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler.

The LSG skipper, nevertheless, has missed out on all cricketing action post the IPL, after he was ruled out of both the South Africa T20I series as well as the Ireland T20I series, where he would have in all probability been given the reins in the absence of skipper Rohit Sharma. Both the players will also miss out on the final Test match against England at Edgbaston, as the former recovers from Covid-19.

The 30-year-old took to Twitter to thank his fans for the support, but admitted that the recovery will be an arduous one.

“Hello everyone. It’s been a tough couple of weeks but the surgery was successful. I’m healing and recovering well. My road to recovery has begun. Thank you for your messages and prayers. See you soon,”

    his post read.

The versatile batsman will undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for the duration of his recovery.
