Reports suggest Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were recently offered a chance to sign Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, however Die Roten turned down the opportunity.

Following his success in England, Spain, and Italy, Cristiano Ronaldo was linked with a move to Germany, with reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern being mentioned as a possible destination. The Portuguese is said to be considering leaving Manchester United in the summer after becoming dissatisfied with the lack of success on the field by the Red Devils and the lack of quality signings in the transfer market.

According to Sky Germany, Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has offered his client to the Bavarians, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner also supporting the move. However, following an internal discussion, Bayern executives declined the opportunity.

However, it is being reported that Mendes’ proposal was reportedly rejected by Bayern executives due to a financial package involving the Portuguese. Ronaldo reportedly earns a net salary of 30 million euros at Manchester United and that figure is significantly higher than the highest salary offered by Bayern in their current wage structure.

Apart from his wages, Ronaldo’s playing style is a source of concern for the Bavarians. Bayern manager Julian Naggelsman prefers players who are quick, can press, and do the dirty work off the ball. The 37-year-old, as evidenced by his time under Ralf Rangnick at United last season, isn’t the best candidate for these roles.

Also since Nagelsmann is younger than Ronaldo, the Bayern management team considered the dressing room atmosphere before rejecting Ronaldo’s proposed move. With Robert Lewandowski set to leave Bayern Munich for Barcelona this summer, the German giants were on the lookout for a replacement.

Reasons Bayern decided against signing Cristiano Ronaldo:

    • Keeping a healthy wage structure within the team (CR7 earns ~ €30m net)
    • Age: 37 years old
    • Bayern want pressing players/willing to run
    • Young coach – healthy dressing room relations

Ronaldo, who scored 18 Premier League goals for United last season, is widely regarded as a capable replacement. While there’s no denying that the Portuguese isn’t as impactful as he once was, he still has the ability to score 25-30 goals per season for a good team.

However, the German champions instead opted to sign Liverpool attacker Sadio Mane for a fee of 32 million on June 22. The Senegalese has signed a contract extension with Bayern until June 2025, which could be worth 41 million depending on his future performance at the Bavarian powerhouse.
