Australia allrounder Glenn Maxwell has made a comeback to Australia’s Test squad after a five-year-long gap for the side’s upcoming two-match series against the Lankan Lions.

“It’s a bit more of a precaution, especially with where he fields. He fields in the outfield and the ground is quite heavy and he does a lot of Ks.

I’m not sure what he’ll be like for the Tests but he’s definitely not available for tomorrow.”

Australia captain Aaron Finch said of Head’s injury in the presser ahead of the final ODI.

Maxwell, who made his Test debut against India in Hyderabad in 2013, has played seven Tests till date, the last of which came against Bangladesh in Chattogram in September 2017.

Earlier that year, he registered his only Test ton – 104 in a drawn game against India in Ranchi. Overall, he has 339 runs at 26.08 and eight wickets at 42.63 with a best of 4/127 in the format. Maxwell could be primed for a spot in the Test XI with Ashton Agar, too, nursing a side injury.

Earlier in June, Australia’s newly appointed coach Andrew McDonald had hinted of Maxwell’s possible return to the Test fold.

“You never know what is going to happen. He (Maxwell) has got a great record in the sub-continent, and in India in particular with that hundred in Ranchi and he can also give us off-spin,”

he said on Melbourne radio station SEN last month.

The Aussies are currently 1-3 down in the five-match ODI series, with the last game to be played on June 24. The two Tests will be played in Galle, the first of which will begin on June 29.
