Mourinho wants to be optimistic about Kane’s injured ankle

The Spurs scored twice in the 2-2 Premier League against the Toffees at Goodison Park, but he had to take off in the dying minutes with an ankle injury.

Just a week before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City and two months before England’s European campaign begin, the Tottenham captain limped off in stoppage time after landing awkwardly while defending a corner.

“I think it is too early, let me be optimistic and believe it is nothing serious. He felt something but let me be optimistic and believe he has time to recover. It’s obvious he is a very important player for us but I cannot speculate. For him to come out it is not because it’s nothing, it’s something. We all felt the same fears of something that stops him playing Wednesday and especially Sunday, but we will see”.

Jose Mourinho said after the game.

In a must-win game for the Portuguese and his team, Kane once again stood out with two brilliant goals snatching just a draw against Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton. The England international netted his first in a composed manner in the 27th minute, but Sigurdsson quickly responded and scored from the spot four minutes later. Everton took the lead just after the hour mark, from a wonderful team move, only to be cancelled out by Kane’s trademark volley into the top corner just minutes after.

A draw helped neither team, especially Spurs, whose dreams of European football will have to wait for another match-week. The Lillywhites remain at the seventh spot, five points behind West Ham (55 points) in fourth. Everton will be hoping for other fixtures to go their way as they sit at eighth with 49 points and a game in hand.

The 27-year-old has proved his massive stature at Tottenham, with 21 goals and 13 assists in 30 league games. He has been involved in 62 goals in 62 appearances under his current manager. And with this latest brace against the Merseyside club, Kane has taken a big step in the golden boot race. The goals also made him the seventh-highest goal scorer in Premier League history, surpassing Robbie Fowler and Jermain Defoe’s record.

However, this injury could impact Spurs’ fate for the remainder of the season, with six league matches to be played while the Carabao Cup final waits next weekend.

Spurs defender Eric Dier also expressed his concern over his teammate’s injury:

“It’s always worrying when you see him limping because he doesn’t fall over easily, he takes a lot of knocks and gets on with it. But it’s early days to see how bad it is.”

But given Kane’s history with a series of ankle injuries in the past, puts both Spurs and England fans in concern. In the 2018/19 season, he was sidelined for a significant period with a left ankle injury while he missed a month the previous campaign with an injury to the right ankle.

Even earlier this season Kane was out injured through the same problem but returned sooner than expected. If Kane’s injury is serious, the England captain might be in serious doubt for England’s Euro 2020 squad in June.
