The Reds, who went down to Real Madrid in the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League final, should consider signing a midfielder like Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, reckons former Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand.
The Frecnhman’s future has been a source of speculation over the past couple of weeks as his future at the West London club looks uncertain after a successful six-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
With just 12 months left to run on his current deal with the Blues, it’s been widely reported that the club are contemplating whether to offer a player a new deal or sell him as he has had problems with injury during his spell.
However, Chelsea might be reluctant to sell the two-time league champion considering his contributions to the club’s success since his arrival from Leicester City in 2016.
And now Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand reckons that for Liverpool to improve their performance in the coming season, they would need a player like Kante in midfield.
“That’s where they need a Kante. A fit Kante and he’s given the licence to get on and jump out of a defensive block, he’s the one player who could cause them problems.”
the former England centre-back said on his FIVE YouTube channel on May 16.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, however, has not been able to use Kante in the past season as much as he would have hoped due to the 31-year-old’s persistent fitness issues, which might tempt the club to sell the player.
Kante’s struggle with injuries can be traced back to when he played through a knee injury and helped the Blues defeat Arsenal in the Europa League final three years ago. That game, though, underlined his importance, but his involvement came at a cost.
The Red Devils are said to be interested in the France international as a potential midfield candidate this term, to boost Erik ten Hag’s midfield quality ahead of the 2022/23 season, reports the Guardian.
The midfielder has scored 13 times in 260 appearances across all seasons over the past six seasons at Chelsea FC, helping the Blues win the Premier League title, the FA Cup, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
