Ralf Rangnick will not continue consulting Manchester United as was the plan previously, the club announced on May 29. The German will instead leave the club after six months of interim management and join the Austria national team on a permanent basis.

As per the initial agreement, the former RB Leipzig boss was supposed to manage the men’s senior team on an interim basis until the end of the season while the club looked for his successor, before then receding into the background to take up a consultancy role.

However, the Austrian FA came knocking midway through his spell at Old Trafford, offering him the job of the national team head coach, which he took and has decided to focus completely on.

“We would like to thank Ralf Rangnick for his efforts as interim manager over the past six months,” it read.

“By mutual agreement, Ralf will now focus solely on his new role as manager of the Austria national team and will not, therefore, be taking up a consultancy role at Old Trafford.

We would like to wish Ralf the best of luck in this next chapter of his career.”

a statement on the club’s website read.

Rangnick joined United in December, succeeding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the dugout, albeit only until the end of the concurrent season. The Red Devils started strongly under the stewardship of the German before things quickly fell apart; he led the team to a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League and was knocked out of Champions League and the FA Cup while maintaining a measly win percentage of 38.

However, the club did secure Rangnick’s successor before the season was over. Dutchman Erik ten Hag has joined the club on a long-term contract after several successful years at AFC Ajax.
