Liverpool slip up in title race with draw against Spurs; Man Utd thrashed by Brighton

Liverpool came from behind but could only manage a 1-1 stalemate at Anfield against Tottenham Hotspur. This has allowed Manchester City to stretch their lead to three points at the top of the table.

Despite coming from behind to restore parity in the contest at 1-1, Jurgen Klopp’s men failed to take the lead in the remaining last quarter of the match and ended up suffering a major blow in the chase for the Premier League title against European hopefuls Tottenham.

Son Heung-min scored the opener almost 10 minutes after emerging out from the half-time break. However, Luis Diaz’s deflected strike cancelled that goal.

Despite a strong push from the Reds in the dying embers of the match, Liverpool failed to find a desperate winning goal.

As a result, they are now level on points with Manchester City although the defending champions have a game in hand. They will be hoping to capitalize on that advantage when they take on Newcastle United at home on Sunday evening.

This is only the second time in 15 matches that Liverpool have dropped points – the last one also being a draw against City last month. The consequences could be severe for Klopp’s side, especially if the Citizens beat Newcastle. This could see Liverpool’s dream of a potentially historic quadruple coming to an end.

Tottenham have earned an important point in their quest for the top four places. Spurs now trail their London-rivals Arsenal by only a single point but do have a game in hand ahead of the eagerly anticipated North London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this week.

Meanwhile, Manchester United players had to hear their fans chant ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ as their faint hope of Champions League qualification has now come to an end in an emphatic fashion.

Brighton and Hove Albion recorded their biggest victory in the English top-flight as they put four goals past United thanks to strikes from Moises Cancedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross, and Leandro Trossard. The Red Devils are lucky that the scoreline didn’t get any worse.

Following defeats to Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool and Arsenal prior to this fixture, United have now lost five consecutive Premier League away games. The defeat also means that United will finish with their worst points tally in the Premier League era. Ralf Rangnick’s side are no longer in a position to match the 64 points they had achieved in the 2013/14 campaign.
