Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and his staff have signed a contract extension with the club, keeping them at Anfield until at least 2026, LFC confirmed via their Twitter handle. Talks accelerated quickly after it was revealed that the Reds had hoped to prolong the German’s stay. Should he see out the remainder of his new deal, barring any further extension, the 54-year-old will have completed eleven years at the club.
The popular belief was that Klopp would leave Liverpool upon his contract expiration in 2024 and then take a sabbatical – an idea he has put forward continually.
“The sabbatical will definitely happen, definitely. This is clearly an agreement with my family, and probably with my family doctor as well, one thing is clear: when Liverpool ends, there will definitely be a year off, nobody needs to call, no matter who tries, it’s a one-year break,”
he told Sport Bild in 2021 and other news outlets – before and since.
However, seeing his side chase silverware on four fronts this season has seemingly re-energized the German into prolonging his stay, says the report. Having already won the English League Cup, Liverpool are in the finals of the FA Cup, the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, and a point behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League.
In the seven years of his Liverpool reign, Klopp has overseen a major overhaul of the first team. Picking the Reds up after a disastrous start to the 2015/16 campaign, the German led them to consistent finishes high up in the table before guiding them to their first-ever Premier League title in 2019/20.
A year earlier, Klopp’s Liverpool had beaten Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final, bringing home the first major piece of silverware of his reign.
