Ryan Campbell, the Netherlands’ head coach and ex-Australia international, has been hospitalized in the United Kingdom after suffering a heart attack on Saturday.

According to the International Cricket Council, the 50-year-old coach was with his children over the weekend, at a local park, before collapsing. Campbell made required urgent medical attention and was admitted to a hospital where he underwent treatment, where he was subsequently put into a medically-induced coma.

However, doctors have since revealed that his is now conscious and has made several successful attempts to breathe on his own. Ryan’s brother Mark recently revealed that while the former wicketkeeper-batsman is out of the coma, he is still in sensitive condition and is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

“They’re not sure now why his heart is still being arrhythmic. So that’s another issue that they’re now going to look at over there.

His wife is there with him. The family have been overwhelmed with the messages of support we’ve been getting from all over the world,”

Mark Cambpell was quoted as saying by the ICC website.

A flamboyant batsman and wicketkeeper who rose to prominence in Western Australia, Campbell played two One-Day Internationals for Australia in 2002 when Adam Gilchrist was away caring for his newborn son. Campbell shone for WA in a 98-game first-class career from 1994 to 2006, scoring 6009 runs at an average of 36.31.
