“Don’t know if those guys are going to be selected again”: SA captain unsure about IPL players’ future in test side

South Africa Test captain Dean Elgar reveals he is unsure if the players who chose Indian Premier League over national team will be selected in future.

The Proteas demolished Bangladesh in a two-match Test series, having lost the ODI series earlier. Elgar’s men dominated the proceedings in both the Tests, winning the first match by 220 runs at Durban and the second by 332 runs at Port Elizabeth.

However, the home side was without the services of some of their key players due to the direct clash with the ongoing IPL 2022. South Africa missed their first choice pacers Kagiso Rabada (Punjab Kings), Marco Jansen (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Anrich Nortje (Delhi Capitals) and Lungi Ngidi (DC) along with key batters Rassie van der Dussen (Rajasthan Royals) and Aiden Markram (SRH) – who skipped the Bangladesh series to participate in the cash-rich tournament.

Ahead of the series, captain Elgar had requested his players to show loyalty and choose the national team. But it is evident that the players wanted to play in the IPL more. Speaking in a post-match press conference after wrapping up the clean sweep series victory, he said:

“I don’t know if those guys are going to be selected again, that’s out of my hands.”

Head coach Mark Boucher also stated that the players who chose IPL over the national team have vacated their spots.  South Africa capped off their impressive home season with a dominant series victory over Bangladesh. The Proteas had defeated India by 2-1 in a three-match Test series earlier this year.

Elgar topped the batting charts in the recently concluded series with 227 runs in four innings at an average of 56.75. The skipper said that he’s enjoying his game at the moment and the way things are going for South Africa cricket.

“Hopefully I’ve nailed down a style of play that we can all follow going forward. I like challenges, which is why I’m still playing Test cricket at nearly 35. I feel I’ve got a lot of good years left, maybe even my best years. I’m really enjoying it,”
