Twice Liverpool went behind at the home of the reigning English champions Manchester City, and twice they fought back to level the scores, keeping the Premier League title race alive as it heads into its final weeks.
One point separates the Reds and the Citizens at the top of the table as the Premier League heads into its final few weeks of the 2021/22 season. Pep Guardiola’s side led the league ahead of their Sunday night meeting with Liverpool by a point, knowing that a win, either way, would drastically change the odds in favor of one or the other. However, as was the case when the sides met earlier this campaign, the game finished 2-2.
City led five minutes into the match through Kevin de Bruyne. The Reds’ defence was caught out by a quickly-taken free-kick, and, mere moments after Alisson denied Raheem Sterling a tap-in, he got beat by De Bruyne’s deflected shot into the corner.
Nonetheless, Jurgen Klopp’s men fought back almost instantaneously, with Diogo Jota levelling the scores in the 13th minute. The Portugal international was left with a simple tap-in after Trent Alexander-Arnold cushioned a cross from Andrew Robertson into his path.
Still, City would go into the break ahead. Thirty-seven minutes in, Joao Cancelo whipped an inswinging cross beyond the Liverpool backline, just as Gabriel Jesus had beaten Alexander-Arnold’s attempts to play him offside. The Brazilian latched onto the ball and, with a deft touch, beat his compatriot Alisson in goal.
However, the Merseysiders levelled the scores again seconds after the half-time interval: taking advantage of City’s high defensive line, Mohamed Salah released Sadio Mane in behind with a through ball, and the latter made no mistake from close range.
Sterling had the ball in the net for the Citizens for the third time in the 63rd minute, but his strike was pulled back for an offside in the build-up. Meanwhile, Riyad Mahrez enjoyed a thrilling cameo off the bench for the champions, first whizzing his 90th-minute free-kick just past the post before missing a gilt-edged chance in the 94th. However, nothing could separate the two sides in the end, and the title race remained open.
