Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni has been fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over-rate against Delhi Capitals in their season opener in Mumbai on Saturday.

MS Dhoni was issued a fine by the governing council of the Indian Premier League after the Super Kings failed to complete their allotted number of overs in the stipulated time.

As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr Dhoni was fined Rs 12 lakh.

the IPL announced in a press release.

Since the last few seasons, the organising committee of the prestigious tournament, noticed that a number of matches were being played beyond the scheduled time. According to the new Code of Conduct, the minimum over-rate this season onwards should be 14.1 overs per hour, excluding the short breaks taken for a strategic time-out.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals beat three-time champions Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede stadium by seven wickets, chasing down a 189 with just eight balls to spare. Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan raked up the man of the match award for his sublime 85 from 54 deliveries and was greatly accompanied by Prithvi Shaw from the other end whose tremendous effort of 72 from just 38 balls decided the game early on.

The opening stand of 138-runs in just 13.3 overs from the Delhi duo revealed the terrible performance by CSK’s bowling unit, with West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, being the most economical among his teammates (28 runs from 4 overs).

During the post-match conference, Dhoni himself pointed out that teams batting first in Wankhede this season has to put up nothing less than 200 as dew plays a massive role in these conditions.

The opposition have half an hour in a 7:30 start, when the pitch is really tacky and the ball stops a bit, so we need to get 15-20 runs extra to be safe. If we get dew consistently, then 200 will be a must on a pitch like this.

    Dhoni stated.
