South Africa defeated England by 3 wickets in Mount Maunganui while Bangladesh claimed a 9-run victory over Pakistan in Hamilton on Monday (March 14).

March 14 proved to be a day of historic wins in the Women’s World Cup 2022 as Bangladesh recorded their first ever win in tournament’s history while South Africa defeated England in a WC after 22 years. The defending champions England have now lost three matches in a row and are facing an early WC exit. South Africa, on the other hand, have won three out of three and look good for the top two finish.

As it happened, England scored 235/9 in 50 overs with Tammy Beaumont adding 62 and Amy Jones scoring 53 runs. Marizanne Kapp was the architect for SA Women, snaring five for 45 in her 10 overs.

In response, Laura Wolvaardt scored a sublime 77 while captain Sune Luus contributed 36. Marizanne Kapp kept the team in the game with her 32-run knock. Needing 10 off 10 when Kapp walked back, Shabnim Ismail and Trisha Chetty took the team over the line with four balls remaining to claim a WC victory over England for the first time since 2000.

    Brief scores

England 235/9 (Beaumont 62; Kapp 5/45) lost to South Africa 236/7 (Wolvaardt 77; Shrubsole 2/34) by 3 wickets.

In another fixture, Bangladesh registered a historic victory over Pakistan, winning their first ever match in World Cup history. Fatima Khatun was the star for Bangladesh with the ball as they defended the target by nine runs at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Monday.

Batting first, Bangladesh posted 234/7 in 50 overs on the back of Fargana Hoque’s brilliant 71. Sharmin Akhter and captain Nigar Sultana made valuable contributions of 44 and 46, respectively.

Pakistan started the chase well with Nahida Khan and Sidra Ameen putting on a 91-run stand for the opening wicket. They were 183/2 at one stage, with 52 more required in 8.1 overs. Fahima Khatun then changed the entire complexion of the game, breaking the back of the Pakistan middle order. Khatun dismissed Omaima Sohail, Aliya Riyaz and Fatima Sana in four balls.

Pakistan lost five wickets for just five runs and were reduced to 188/7. Sidra Ameen continued from one end and scored a magnificent 104 but her run out when they needed 21 off 14 ended the hopes for Pakistan.

    Brief scores

    Bangladesh 234/7 (Hoque 71; Sandhu 3/41) defeated Pakistan 225/9 (Ameen 104; Khatun 3/38) by 9 runs.
