A riveting set of two days ended in Bangalore with the culmination of the IPL 2022 mega auction, as all ten teams finalised their respective squads at the start of the league’s new three-year cycle. All ten teams went wholeheartedly for the players they would’ve eyed pre-auction and ended up making a very decent feast of reconstructing or compiling their squad afresh.
Defending champions Chennai Super Kings bought back their pace bowling allrounder for sum of INR 14 crores with an evident intent of recreating the squad or the side that brought them great success in IPL 2021. With that in mind, they also got Dwayne Bravo, Robin Uthappa and Mitchell Santner back in their camp while making some other impressive new signings.
Mumbai Indians made the auction’s biggest winning bid to get wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan back. Kishan was picked for a gigantic sum of INR 15.25 crores as multiple teams went after the promising young left-hander. MI also made a futuristic punt with England pacer Jofra Archer for INR 8 crores.
Even as Archer is unlikely to take part in IPL 2022, MI reserved an amount for him with the intention of availing his services in the following two years. Archer’ inclusion paves the way for his exciting pairing with Jasprit Bumrah.
The IPL 2022 auction also saw a few steals. With the auction dynamics playing their part, these cricketers emerged as the most notable bargained picks, with David Warner to Delhi Capitals for 6.25 crores leading the pack.
Quinton de Kock went to Lucknow for INR 6.75 crores, Jonny Bairstow to Punjab Kings for INR 6.75 crores. DC also bagged the services of improved allrounder Mitchell Marsh for 6.5 crores. One other steal entered the Kolkata Knight Riders camp when they re-bought pacer Pat Cummins for INR 7.25 crores.

Liam Livingstone (11.25 crores to PBKS) and Nicholas Pooran (10.75 crores to SRH) were the two notable entrants to the high-prize overseas picks where Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga equalled Pooran in Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lockie Ferguson joined Gujarat Titans for 10 crores.
Multiple teams were also eyeing a new captain at this year’s mega auction. With that in mind, KKR went after Shreyas Iyer for a huge sum of INR 12.25 crores, while RCB got last year’s second-highest run-maker Faf Du Plessis for INR 7 crores, which makes him a steal at that price considering his form and captaincy credentials.
There was huge back and forth at the respective tables for some of the uncapped overseas and Indian stars. Among the Indians, Lucknow franchise made pacer Avesh Khan the most expensive buy for 10 crores, while GT made Haryana allrounder Rahul Tewatia the second most expensive uncapped pick with a sum of INR 9 crores. Third on the list, Rahul Tripathi went to SRH for INR 8.50 crores.
