United’s problems not down to Ronaldo, new striker needed – Rangnick

Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that the club will attempt to sign a young forward in the summer. The German also claimed his team’s current problems in front of goal are not solely down to the misfiring Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portugal international is the team’s top-scorer with fourteen goals in all competitions, eight of which have come in the Premier League while six in the UEFA Champions League. However, the 37-year-old has endured a dry spell lately and his problems in front of goal against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup – a game in which he missed a penalty – came under scrutiny.

However, Rangnick believes that his team, overall, is lacking a ruthless streak, despite creating plenty of chances in their recent games.

“It’s not only about Cristiano Ronaldo, that he should score more goals, it is obvious,”

“I think we are creating enough chances and enough opportunities in the last couple of games but we just didn’t score enough goals.

“But it is not only an issue with Cristiano, it’s also an issue with all the other players, especially with the offensive players that we do not score enough goals if you bear in mind how many chances we create.

    he said.

Rangnick also spoke about United’s options at centre-forward, confirming that the club will look to buy a new, young striker in the summer as Edinson Cavani’s contract comes to an end.

    “This is obvious,”

he stated, regarding his side’s need for a younger forward.

“Edison’s contract is running out in the summer, and the club needs the best possible centre-forward. This is an obvious one. I think everyone is aware of that.”

Despite their recent struggles in front of goal, United have enjoyed a minor resurgence under Rangnick. Inheriting a time in a downward spiral, the German has steered the Red Devils to five wins in nine league games, during which they have lost just once. They have scored 13 goals during the same period and conceded seven.
