A late second-half comeback from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton condemned Tottenham Hotspur to a Premier League defeat. Elsewhere, Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne scored in Manchester City’s routine win over Brentford.

Eleven minutes away from another victory, Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur were instead pegged back and then left behind by the Saints, who won 3-2 to propel themselves away from the relegation fight. At the same time, they inflicted some serious damage to their opponents’ Champions League qualification hopes.

Cristian Romero had the ball in the back of the net for Spurs in the 13th minute, but his celebration was stopped in its tracks by the assistant referee’s raised flag, signalling that the defender had been in an offside position when he scored.

The North London outfit did have something to celebrate five minutes later when Jan Bednarek turned a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg cross past his goalkeeper for an own-goal. Chelsea loanee Armando Broja equalized in the 23rd minute. The forward stabbed home Romain Perraud’s cross after Spurs had failed to deal with the danger.

Armando Broja's game by numbers vs. Tottenham:

    43 touches
    8 duels won
    7 ball recoveries
    6 aerial duels won
4 possessions won in the final third (most)
    4 shots (=most)
    3 final third entries
    1 dribble completed
    1 foul won
    1 goal

However, Spurs’ lead lasted just nine minutes, and Saints were back level through Mohamed Elyounoussi, who headed in a James Ward–Prowse cross past Hugo Lloris.

Three minutes later, Saints scored again – the goal, remarkably similar to their previous one. Ward-Prowse delivered an inswinging cross from the right half-space, and Che Adams was present to head it in.

Spurs scored again through Steven Bergwijn in stoppage time, but the goal was ruled out for offside, and Saints held on for a memorable win.

Elsewhere, City extended their lead to 12 points at the top of the table with a routine win over Brentford. Riyad Mahrez gave City the lead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute after Mads Roerslev had fouled Raheem Sterling inside the box.

Kevin De Bruyne put some distance between the two sides when he capitalized on an error by David Raya, slotting the ball in calmly after the goalkeeper had given it away to Sterling with a poor pass. As such, Josep Guardiola’s men claimed their 13th win in 14 games – one that takes them further clear at the top.
