Man Utd lose points at Turf Moor; Trippier scores debut Newcastle goal in win over Everton

New signing Wout Weghorst shone for Burnley as they held Manchester United to a frustrating draw at home. Elsewhere, January’s two most active clubs met, with Newcastle United reigning supreme over Frank Lampard’s Everton.

United thought they had taken the lead in the twelfth minute through Raphael Varane against Burnley, only for VAR to rule the goal out for an impact offside. The Frenchman wasn’t the one offside, but his centre-back partner Harry Maguire was adjudged to have interfered in the play from an illegal position, prompting the referee to scratch United’s lead away.

There was nothing dubious about the goal the Red Devils scored six minutes later. Paul Pogba thumped a Luke Shaw cross into the roof of the net and celebrated his first league goal for the club since January 2021.

Shortly after, the ball was back in the Burnley net – Ben Mee diverting a Marcus Rashford cross past his goalkeeper – but the assistant’s flag went up, signalling a foul by Pogba on Josh Brownhill in the build-up.

Pope kept Burnley in the game by denying Edinson Cavani from a yard out before stopping Rashford at his near post with his leg. His heroics would not go down in vain; Burnley equalized two minutes into the second half. Wout Weghorst sent three defenders hurtling in the wrong direction with a Cryuff turn before playing Jay Rodriguez in behind the disorganized Manchester United defence.

Rodriguez stayed on his feet and squeezed the ball past David De Gea to make it 1-1. The Spaniard denied Weghorst his first goal in English football a few minutes later, as United limped over the finish line with just a point in the bag.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United beat Everton 3-1, handing Frank Lampard the first defeat of his new role. The Toffees took the lead in the 36th minute when Matt Targett’s clearance from a Mason Holgate shot bounced off Jamaal Lascelles into the net for an own goal. A minute later, Lascelles made amends – his header deflected off of Holgate, and the Magpies found themselves level.

Lampard introduced their new signing Dele Alli after the break. The Englishman lost the ball to Joe Willock in the 56th minute, which was then quickly circulated out wide to Allan Saint-Maximin, whose cross was turned home by Ryan Fraser. Kieran Trippier scored from a free-kick in the 80th minute, diminishing any chance of a later Everton comeback.
