Messages from sportspersons and millions of fans flooded social media after the doyen singer passed away aged 92 on February 6.
On Sunday, India lost a stalwart as veteran playback singer Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last in Mumbai. She had tested positive for Covid-19 back in January and had been admitted to the hospital for more than a month, where her health steadily deteriorated. Mangeshkar passed away after suffering from multiple organs dysfunction syndrome.
She was a legendary playback singer with more than eight decades of experience in the field and a staggering 50,000 songs to her name.
Lata didi, as she was fondly called by her millions of admirers, was also a passionate fan of cricket and Sachin Tendulkar in particular, and on many occasions observed fasts while the legendary batsman was batting so that Tendulkar could score a century.
Mangeshkar was a celebrated icon in the entire world, and cricketers and various personalities from around the globe mourned her untimely passing.
The Indian ODI squad wore black armbands during their game against the West Indies on Sunday to pay homage to the doyen artist. The official handle of the BCCI took to Twitter to express their sorrow.
Sachin Tendulkar was one of the first to pay homage to Lata didi, posting a heartfelt tribute on Twitter. The ex-Indian international was also present at Mangeshkar’s last rites ceremony.
BCCI President and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was among the millions who mourned Mangeshkar’s passing, posting a condolence tribute on Twitter.
”RIP, Bharat Ratna. A very sad day for all Indians. When you speak of talent she was one of the greatest and rarest the country has seen. Hard to believe that 20-year-old lady is no more. Her voice sounded like that every time. Lots of respect and love. Be in peace wherever your are.”
he wrote in the now-deleted tweet.
Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli also paid homage to Mangeshkar.
Bengaluru FC and Indian national football team captain Sunil Chhetri has also offered his condolences.
Mangeshkar was truly a legend who crossed all boundaries, as Pakistani captain Babar Azam also conveyed his condolences on Twitter. Legendary bowler Wasim Akram, World Cup-winning captain turned prime minister Imran Khan also mourned Mangeshkar’s passing with tributes on social media.
