Newcastle pursuing deals for Targett, Burn, Ekitike, and Lingard on deadline day

The Magpies, helped by their new riches, are pursuing several deals on Deadline Day in the hopes of warding off the relegation threat. Among their targets are Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard and Reims forward Hugo Ekitike.

Newcastle United will be the busiest of the twenty Premier League clubs on the deadline day of the January transfer window – if reports are to be believed. They are currently chasing signings across all areas of the pitch and hope to get in multiple players before the window winds down. The strugglers hope additions in all positions will help them stave off relegation, which is their most pressing concern at the moment.

Newcastle have had approaches for Jesse Lingard rebuffed by Manchester United previously. The Red Devils demand an exorbitant fee from the Magpies for a player who will be out of contract in five months. However, as per The Athletic, Newcastle will attempt to salvage a deal before the window is shut: the club believes there is room for negotiating a compromise despite United’s rigid stance.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have found success in their attempts to sway Brighton and Hove Albion to sell versatile defender Dan Burn to them. According to The Guardian, Burn is on his way to Saint James’s Park after the two clubs agreed on a 12.5 million pounds fee.

Eddie Howe’s side is also close to adding Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett to its ranks. The Englishman fell down the pecking order at Villa Park following the arrival of Lucas Digne and will now join the Magpies on loan until the end of the season.

Further to the delight of Newcastle fans, the club has had a 25 million pounds bid for Reims attacker Hugo Ekitike accepted – reports Sky Sports. The fee for the France U20 international could rise to 33 million after add-ons, but Newcastle will be able to bring in one of their key targets – one who has been on the radar of several other clubs – this winter.

Should the respective deals go through, Newcastle’s winter signings tally will reach seven, following the permanent captures of Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, and Bruno Guimaraes.
