Man Utd mark Villa star McGinn for summer move; no progress made for Bundesliga talents Haidara & Zakaria

United fans hoping for a new midfielder in the winter might be left disappointed after reports emerged that the club hasn’t made any progress in the market. But, they have earmarked Aston Villa’s John McGinn for a summer move.

Manchester United’s lack of depth in central midfield was laid bare in their recent 2-2 draw against Aston Villa. United’s shortage of options in that department proved costly as the game got away from the starting midfield pair of Nemanja Matic and Fred, and Villa came back from two goals down to equalize late on.

The area remains of concern for the club and, with Donny van de Beek yet to hit his best form and Scott McTominay failing to progress to a level above, it is widely accepted that a new midfielder would be required going forward.

To that end, RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara – currently with Mali at the African Cup of Nations – has been linked with a move to Old Trafford during the ongoing transfer window.

Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria was also name-dropped in recent reports. The Swiss midfielder would be available for a cut-price deal in the present window, having already announced his decision to leave the club upon contract expiry next summer.

However, according to The Athletic, the Red Devils are currently not in advanced talks with either player. Moreover, the prospect of Zakaria moving to Old Trafford in the future looks bleak, as he hasn’t convinced the club of his suitability.

Jude Bellginham and Declan Rice are thought to be Manchester United’s long-term target. However, the club will also attempt to sign Aston Villa’s John McGinn next summer, reports the Telegraph. The midfielder has been a player of interest to United for a while, as he was earmarked by the club’s former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Meanwhile, the Scotsman has also convinced United’s technical director Darren Fletcher of his several qualities – both as a player and a leader.

The report states McGinn would be available to Manchester United for 40 million pounds. However, whether the Red Devils press on with a bid depends on his contract situation at the club, especially with Villa keen to tie him down for the long term.
