Newcastle set to activate Wood’s release clause to sign him from Burnley

The overhaul job at Newcastle United is officially in place, and the club have already signed senior full-back Kieran Trippier to bolster their chances of survival. They are keen on getting a few more players in the coming week with a number of players like Sven Botman and Diego Carlos as centre-back options to go with some targets for the striker position.

They seemed to have completed their second signing of the season to cover up the striker position they were looking at, and it is being said that the club have triggered the release clause on Burnley’s Chris Wood. The New Zealand striker has a release clause of 25 million pounds and Burnley believed that the Magpies might not trigger such a high valuation, but much to their surprise, they have done it.

The Burnley striker is set to undergo his medical on Wednesday and will be made available for the club’s next fixture in the Premier League, according to multiple sources.

Although the club have some impressive options right now in the form of Joelington and Callum Wilson, the former has been contributing heavily in defensive duties whilst Wilson’s fitness has been a concern.

Wood has been one of the pivotal cogs of Sean Dyche’s Burnley setup for a while now and has proven himself to be a fantastic target man. He signed for Burnley in 2017 and has scored more than 10 goals in four consecutive seasons for the Lancashire club. In 165 appearances, he scored 53 times, averaging a goal nearly every three games.

He has scored thrice thus far in the ongoing season and will now be joining a relegation battle rival, which apparently is infuriating Dyche. The Turf Moor-based club are stationed in the 18th position on the points table and are level on points with the Geordies.

However, Burnley have played two games less than Newcastle, and will be desperate to make that advantage count. The club will be keen on confirming the signing very soon and complete the other deals that have been on the radar. Newcastle are also linked to some of the big names in the English league like Anthony Martial from Manchester United and Divock Origi from Liverpool, but it will not be very easy to get them on board.
