India Women need to ‘start from scratch’ after loss against South Africa, WV Raman says

India Women’s head coach WV Raman feels that his side will need to restart from scratch after having a long layoff from competitive cricket.

It wasn’t the best of returns to competitive cricket for the Indian Women as they went down in both the ODI and T20I series against South Africa Women. In the five-match ODI series, the Mithali Raj-led side could win just one game, with South Africa Women dominating most of the series. On the other hand, India Women who were without regular skipper T20I Harmanpreet Kaur due to injury lost the T20I series 1-2 and won the last game.

This series against South Africa Women was India’s first since the Women’s T20 World Cup final, which was played in the first week of March last year. Despite the men returning to the game through the Indian Premier League and the Australian tour, the Indian Women’s cricketers played just a couple of games in the UAE as a part of the Women’s T20 Challenge in November.

India Women’s head coach WV Raman felt that his side needs to improve across formats and start from scratch as they have had a long lay-off. Moreover, he emphasized the need for regular camps and at least ten days of net sessions before a series.

We have to start from scratch. A long camp will pave the way for this. They have had a long break. The girls need to improve on all fronts. The girls themselves want these camps. They need to top up on their fitness and fine-tune their skills as well. To achieve certain goals, we need to have camps on a periodic basis,

Raman was quoted saying in his interview with news18.com.

There is no future series scheduled as of now for the Indian Women’s side. The 2022 Women’s World Cup is less than a year away, and India need quite a bit of preparation going into the show-piece event. However, BCCI did announce that the Indian Women’s side will play a one-off Test match against England in England later this year.
