19-year-old allrounder Yash Dhull has been appointed captain of India’s 17-member squad announced this December 19 for the forthcoming ICC U-19 World Cup in the Caribbean.

The All-India Junior Selection Committee confirmed the squad for the next edition of the youth boys World Cup in the West Indies, with Dhull being named the skipper of the side.

The 14th edition of the U-19 World Cup will be played in the Caribbean from January 14 to February 5. 16 qualified teams have been divided into four groups, with the top two from each making it through to the quarterfinals before the semi-finals and the final are held.

The tournament will host a total of 48 games played at 10 venues based in Guyana, St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and Antigua and Barbuda.

Dhull & company have the responsibility to keep India’s rich legacy going in the U-19 World Cups. India have clinched the trophy four times in 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2018. The Asian giants are placed in Group B of the competition where they are joined by South Africa, Ireland and Uganda.

Group A features defending champions Bangladesh along with England, Canada and the United Arabic Emirates. In Group D, we have hosts West Indies joined by Australia, Scotland and Sri Lanka. Group C includes Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

India will kick-off their campaign against the Proteas on January 15, before facing Ireland on January 19 and Uganda on January 22, respectively. India’s opening game will be played in Guyana and the last two group games in Trinidad.

Apart from the strong 17-member squad, where SK Rasheed has been named Dhull’s deputy, the junior selection panel has also selected five stand-by players keeping in mind the travelling restrictions amid the COVID-19 protocols.
