Uncertainty over MS Dhoni’s deputy for CSK

While the big stars like Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina have joined the Chennai Super Kings camp in Mumbai and are undergoing quarantine, there is still uncertainty over who will be the vice-captain for CSK for the upcoming season. CSK CEO revealed that the decision will be taken closer to the tournament.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a poor season in 2020. It was by far their worst performance in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). They have played 11 seasons so far, and 2020 was the first-ever edition where the MS Dhoni-led Chennai side couldn’t make it to the top four.

In fact, the three-time IPL champions just about managed to avoid the wooden spoon. They won just three and lost eight from the first 11 games before winning their last three games and moving to the seventh spot on the points table.

Veteran Uttar Pradesh batsman and CSK vice-captain returned home before the 2020 season due to personal reasons and missed the entire tournament. CSK missed his experience with the bat and in the field quite a bit.

This year, the 34-year-old batsman who announced his international retirement in August 2020 alongside MS Dhoni will be available and has already joined the Mumbai CSK camp. He landed in Mumbai on the 24th of March and is likely to be out of quarantine in another day or so and resume practice with the other CSK members who have already landed.

However, Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan hinted that Raina would not slot back indirectly as the vice-captain, and a call will be taken much closer to the Indian T20 league. There are speculations that Ravindra Jadeja might be a potential candidate. Faf du Plessis is an experienced campaigner and could be another option.

We’ll name the vice-captain closer to the tournament,

Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan was quoted saying by Cricbuzz.

CSK will kickstart their 2021 season of the IPL at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where they play Delhi Capitals on the 10th of April. They have four more games lined up in Mumbai, apart from three in Delhi and Bengaluru and two in Kolkata.
