Tuchel hints contract stalemate behind Christensen snub; Jorginho’s agent says no extenstion talks yet

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel hinted that the reason behind Andreas Christensen’s first-team absence is his ongoing contract stalemate with Chelsea. Meanwhile, Jorginho’s agent reiterated that talks are yet to be opened between his client and the club.

Chelsea head coach Tuchel has hinted that the contractual stalemate with the club is behind centre-back Andreas Christensen’s continued absence from the first team. The Dane has found starting eleven minutes hard to come by lately, with academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah taking his place in the team instead.

In his Watford pre-match press conference, the German hinted towards the same, claiming that the club wants total commitment from the 25-year-old, whom they believed they had found an agreement with weeks ago.

“We are waiting since a long time now for confirmation,”

“It is on Andreas to act how he acts on the pitch, he needs to act now off the pitch, and walk the talk because he tells us that he loves Chelsea, he tells us that he wants to stay and be a big part, because he is a big part of a big club, and I think he is a perfect fit and I think that he is not done yet here,”

    the German said.

While the need to lock Christensen down is an urgent one for Chelsea, the same can’t be said for Ballon d’Or podium finisher Jorginho. The Italian’s contract at Stamford Bridge runs a year further than Christensen’s – until June 2023 – but his agent confirmed to TMW that talks between the player and the club are non-existent at this point.

Joao Santos – who represents the 29-year-old central midfielder – speculated that an official dialogue between the relevant parties might commence at a later date.

Apart from Jorginho, N’Golo Kante’s Chelsea contract also comes to an end in June 2023. Meanwhile, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva, and Cesar Azpilicueta have just seven months left on their current deals – and will be eligible to enter formal talks with interested teams starting January 1, 2022.
