”He told me to be a monster”: Tammy Abraham on working under Jose Mourinho

AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham, who made a €40 million move from Chelsea in August, feels Jose Mourinho has turned him into a monster. The Englishman, who was off to a stellar start to his new career in Serie A, scored five goals in the season. However, a small dip in Roma’s form has left the striker with just one goal in the last eight games.

However, the 24-year-old is confident of turning things around. He told media that Jose has asked him to be a monster once he s on the pitch, and that usually, he’s just too nice when he’s in a match. He feels that Jose’s presence is helping him garner that extra aggression which is necessary for him to develop.

Abraham: "Jose has told me just to be a monster! I think one of the things he said was that I was too much of a nice player and that you have to show that aggressiveness. It’s not always about being nice on the pitch. You need that character and presence to frighten defenders." pic.twitter.com/DOgosxyzGl

He also talked about the challenges that footballers face when they transition from one country to another. The club itself has undergone plenty of changes in recent years, the major one being the appointment of former Champions League winner Mourinho.

“I felt the sooner I settled in the better, and started learning different types of football and different styles. I’ve gone to spread my wings and hopefully I can keep up the level of performances I need to stay in the team.

“Of course (the World Cup) was in the back of my mind but really I just wanted to play football. For me, it’s still a young career and I just felt I needed to go out and play some games to improve and hit the highest levels and hopefully I can keep striving on,”

    the striker said.

Abraham’s impressive run also got him a call up from Gareth Southgate during the international break. He came off the bench against Albania to replace Harry Kane, and despite not adding to the score sheet, England won the fixture 5-0 and have gone ahead in their pursuit to gaining a direct qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Talking about his chances in the English national setup, Abraham said that he must remain prepared for a call-up and do his best at the club level, as the English unit has some outstanding forwards like Kane, Marcus Rashford, Dominic Calwert-Lewin, and others.
