Man United still the top club in the world – says Solskajer ahead of Manchester derby

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United manager, still believes that his side are the best in the world, let alone Manchester. The Norwegian was part of the club during some of its highest points and believes that there is enough credit left in the bank from that era to help the Red Devils stay on top – at least, symbolically – for a few more years.

Asked whether he could imagine rivals Manchester City surpassing United in the future, the club legend answered in the negative. However, he did say that the Citizens have to be respected for what they’ve built over the last decade.

“No, I can’t (imagine City surpassing United),”

“But, the thing is, you have to have respect for what they have done in the last 10 years or even more so in the last four or five with how dominant they have been in England and in Europe.

“But we are Man Utd, we are always going to come back, I think we are the number one club in Manchester and that also probably means in the world.”

    the Norwegian said.

United are yet to win a league title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, after delivering the last of his 13 championships. In the years since, the Red Devils have appointed David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Solskjaer but to no avail, largely speaking. The club won a Europa League title and an EFL Cup under Mourinho, and an FA Cup under Van Gaal, but are trophyless since 2018.

In contrast, Manchester City have won three league titles in the last four years – the odd one going to Liverpool. Scaling down, the Red Devils do have an upper hand in recent fixtures, as they are unbeaten against the Citizens in their last four league meetings – winning three of them.
