Australian leg-spinner Georgia Wareham has been ruled out of the Ashes that is coming up, having picked up an ACL injury in her left knee during the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League season. The injury is quite serious, which rules her out of the ICC Women’s World Cup and the Commonwealth Games next year.
The 22-year-old was representing the Melbourne Renegades this WBBL and picked up an injury during the game against Adelaide Strikers. She had a surgery last week, but needs a reconstruction of her ACL, which can only happen earlier next year, according to the Australian team doctor Pip Inge.
“Due to her previous history, Georgia requires a two-stage process to reconstruct her left ACL. She had a knee arthroscopy in Adelaide last week to remove the previous graft and will now commence rehab in Melbourne while she awaits for the knee to be ready for the ACL reconstruction in early 2022,”
Inge stated.
Wareham made her international debut against New Zealand in September 2018, shortly after that, she made her ODI debut against Pakistan. The 22-year-old leg-spinner is an important member of their limited overs setup and made her Test debut recently against India.
This injury she picked up leaves Australia with one major presence out of the spin department. However, Sophie Molineux, Ash Gardner and Molly Strano provide decent depth, with the likes of Jess Jonassen and Amanda-Jade Wellington knocking on the doors.
Having played a crucial role in Australia’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2018, Wareham was lloking to play as much part as possible in the coming months, which includes three pieces of silverware that they are desperate to get hold of.
After the WBBL concludes, the English women will be in Australia and will kick-off the tour with a Test match in Canberra towards the last week of January. It will be followed by three T20Is and three ODIs, which will be played across Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne.
